EUDAT pilot project on herbarium image analysis
Digitarium is participating in Herbadrop, an archival service for long-term preservation of herbarium specimen images and a tool for extracting information by image analysis.
Herbadrop is investigating use of EUDAT services for transmitting existing images of herbarium specimens along with the associated data to EUDAT repository at CINES, the French supercomputer centre, using their data synchronisation and exchange service. The ingestion into EUDAT's B2SAFE service will be carried out in accordance with the centralized persistent identifiers (PID) management system used in EUDAT (e.g. EPIC handle). The discovery, sharing and visualization of the data objects will be performed with the EUDAT's B2FIND service. New methods of extracting information from the specimen labels using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) are also being investigated. All these services will be used in DigiWeb, Digitarium's transcription portal.
